Poly welding has many useful and effective applications within the civil works industry. But did you know that there are three different types of poly welding?

As experts in poly welding, our team at BMP Civil are very familiar with the three different types.

Butt Fusion

Butt fusion is probably the most common type of poly welding method. It is used to join pieces of HDPE piping together and is commonly used to join longer lengths together. This method makes use of a specialised butt welding machine, which is used to heat up the two ends of the pipes, and then press them together until the joint has cooled down. Once this happens, the two ends have been welded into place.

Electrofusion

The next type of poly welding is electrofusion. This method makes use of special fittings that have electric heating elements. The HDPE pipes that are to be joined are inserted into the special fitting after they have been cleaned. A clamp is often used, and voltage is used to melt the heater coil inside the fitting. It also melts the exterior of the pipe wall. Once cooled, the result is an extremely strong and neat join.

poly welding

This type of welding is very popular as the equipment is very safe and simple to use. The steps are always the same in terms of voltage and cooling time, and there is very little room for anything to go wrong.

Extrusion

Extrusion welding makes use of a specialised hand tool, called an extrusion welder or extrusion gun. Polywire is pulled into the tool and is heated up so that it comes out of the welder’s nozzle. The pressure, as well as the heat, of the gun, is what causes the HDPE pipe to melt and bond together. This type of welding is very tricky and difficult to get neat, but a professional extrusion welder can perform an incredible join.
